His parents are Henrik Petrie and Emma Schum. He is a third-generation Hungarian. He has four siblings. He graduated from Canisius High School and earned his BA and MA degrees from St. Bonaventure College in Allegany. He completed his high school studies in Buffalo, NY. He applied to become a diocesan priest, then entered the Franciscan Order in Paterson, NJ, in 1921. He took his perpetual vows in 1925. He was ordained a priest in 1926. According to records, he was a hard-working and enthusiastic man. His nickname was Fr. Cappie.
