His parents were Béla Maróti (Marhofer), a schoolteacher, and Alice Fejér. He completed his high school studies in Eger at the St. Bernard Cistercian High School. He entered the order on August 29, 1949. He took his first vows in Zirc on June 22, 1950, and then fled abroad. He took his perpetual vows on December 24, 1953. He completed his theological studies from 1950 to 1953 in Rome at the Pontificio Ateneo e Collegio Sant’Anselmo, and then from 1953 to 1954 in Spring Bank, WI, USA, at Saint Bernard College. He was ordained a priest on May 29, 1954, in Milwaukee, WI, USA. He was excommunicated in 1958. He later became a diocesan priest but subsequently left the priesthood. According to records, he also earned a medical degree. His first wife was Helen; after her death, he remarried—his second wife’s name was Julie. He had two children with his first wife and several stepchildren through his second wife. He was a recognized authority in the treatment of alcoholism and other addictions. In 1958, he founded the DePaul Rehabilitation Hospital in Milwaukee, which was one of the first residential rehabilitation centers for veterans struggling with addiction and homelessness. This institution played a pioneering role in the fields of addiction treatment and social reintegration. He was a member of the board of directors of the American College of Addiction Administrators and the North American Alcohol and Drug Abuse Problems Association. He is a member of the board of directors of the Christine Center in Wisconsin. According to records, he remained an active Catholic even after his retirement. His love of opera led him to serve on the board of directors of the Florentine Opera since 1998. Together with his wife, Julie, he founded the Maroti Family Foundation, which attracts young people to the opera. His memory lives on vividly in Milwaukee, particularly through the LSS Foundation and DePaul Rehabilitation Hospital, which carry on his legacy of supporting people struggling with addiction and homelessness.
