His parents were Lieutenant Colonel Ödön Kereszty and Margit Csighy, a schoolteacher from Csere. He began his high school studies at the Cistercian High School in Buda, and after it was nationalized, he continued at the Sándor Petőfi High School in Budapest. He secretly entered the Cistercian Order on February 10, 1952. He earned a degree in library science from Eötvös Loránd University in 1955. He then worked as a librarian in Mezőkövesd, while secretly undergoing his monastic training. He took his first vows on February 12, 1953. He left the country in 1956. Between 1956 and 1963, he earned a doctorate in theology at the Pontificio Ateneo Sant’Anselmo in Rome. He took his final vows on September 18, 1960. He was ordained a priest on October 2, 1960, in the private chapel of Bishop Franz Žak of St. Pölten. In 1963, he moved to the United States, where he remained until his death.
