Biographical data
Árpád Ferenc Félix Holocsi, OFM (August 28, 1912, Upper Hungary – 1977, Atlantic Ocean) was a Franciscan friar who served with the Franciscan mission in the Holy Land and in the Hungarian pastoral ministry in Argentina. He originally trained as a baker and pastry chef, then entered the Franciscan Order at a young age. He spent his novitiate in Jerusalem, at the monastery of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where he lived through World War II and the years that followed.

In the Holy Land, he played a particularly significant role in improving relations with Eastern Christians. He stood firmly up for the rights of Catholic communities, while at the same time cultivating loving and friendly relationships with Eastern Rite faithful and monks. According to his contemporaries, he thereby contributed to the later ecumenical rapprochement in the Holy Land.

In June 1952, he was transferred to Argentina. His task was to raise funds for the Holy Land in the northern provinces of the country, primarily in the regions of Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán, Catamarca, Santiago del Estero, and La Rioja. His work was extremely demanding: he traveled throughout the country under poor transportation conditions and extreme climatic conditions. The high-altitude regions and the extreme temperatures took a particularly heavy toll on his health.

He regularly visited the scattered Hungarian families living in the northern provinces. He was received with great affection by both Argentines and Hungarian emigrants. Throughout his life, he suffered from diabetes that gradually worsened, damaging his eyesight and eventually his heart. Despite his condition, he continued his missionary journeys because he did not want to abandon the people to whom he had been bound by more than twenty years of service.
In his final years, he visited once more the places that were important to him: his homeland, Budapest, Vienna, the Mariazell Basilica, the city of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, and then Jerusalem. When he boarded the ship to return to Argentina, he was already seriously ill. He died during the sea voyage; a fellow friar found him dead in his cabin. His body was received in Buenos Aires, and following a solemn funeral Mass, he was laid to rest in the Franciscan mausoleum in Chacarita. Cementerio de la Chacarita

His contemporaries remembered him as one of the leading figures of the 20th-century Hungarian Franciscan mission, who dedicated his entire life to serving the faithful in the Holy Land and the diaspora. He rests in the order’s cemetery in Chacarita.
