Biographical data
Béla Pesznyák (Ada, Yugoslavia, October 27, 1949 – ) is a Roman Catholic priest and a member of the clergy of the Diocese of Subotica who served Hungarian Catholic communities in Canada for more than twenty years.
He completed his high school studies at the Paulinum in Subotica between 1964 and 1968. He continued his studies in philosophy and theology at institutions in Zagreb and later at the Pontifical Institutes in Rome. Pope Paul VI ordained him a priest in Rome on June 29, 1975. Following his ordination, he began his pastoral ministry within the Diocese of Subotica. He served as an assistant pastor in Cservenka, Véprőd, and Szivac, and later as chaplain to the sisters in Verbász. Later, he held various positions of responsibility in the bishop’s office: he served as a bishop’s advisor, as the diocesan judge for the protection of marriage, as a delegate to the Priests’ Senate, and as a member of several diocesan committees.
In 1992, he was appointed to provide pastoral care for the Hungarian Catholic faithful in Canada. First in Winnipeg (1992–1996), then in Vancouver (1996–2001), Hamilton (2001–2009), Courtland (2009–2014), and finally in Ottawa (2014–2016), serving as a parish priest and Hungarian-language pastor. During his tenure, he played an active role in sustaining the religious, cultural, and community life of Hungarian Catholic communities in Canada.
In 2016, he returned to the Diocese of Subotica. He worked as the diocesan archivist and was later granted the title of honorary archdeacon. Even after his retirement, he continued his pastoral ministry as an assistant priest. He currently serves as an assistant pastor at the parish of St. Teresa of Avila Cathedral in Subotica, while also continuing to participate in the diocese’s archival and historical work.
