Biographical data
András Mezei, a Roman Catholic priest, was born on November 27, 1977, in Ditró, Transylvania (Romania). He spent his childhood and youth in his native village before moving to Hungary. He completed his theological studies at the Blessed Gizella Seminary in Veszprém. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Veszprém on June 14, 2008, in Veszprém.
Following his ordination, his first assignment was at the Parish of Our Lady of the Hungarians in Keszthely, where he served as an assistant pastor from 2008 to 2013. In addition to his work as a chaplain, he also taught religion at the János Ranolder Roman Catholic Elementary School.
In 2013, the Archdiocese of Veszprém appointed him parish priest of Csabrendek. For two years, he provided pastoral care for the large village and its surrounding communities.
In 2015, as a result of cooperation between the Archdiocese of Veszprém, the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, and the Diocese of Cleveland, he was sent to the United States. The reason for the appointment was that the Hungarian Catholic community in Cleveland had been left without a Hungarian pastor following the unexpected death of the former pastor, Sándor Siklódi. András Mezei arrived in Cleveland at the end of June 2015, where he assumed the duties of administrator and pastor of the St. Imre Hungarian Roman Catholic Parish.
During his time serving in Cleveland, he played a significant role in organizing local Hungarian community and church life. He became involved in the programs of the Hungarian Scouting movement, cultural organizations, and Hungarian associations, and was a regular speaker and participant at Hungarian community events. In several interviews, he emphasized that one of the most important goals of his mission was to maintain the spiritual and cultural connection between Hungarians living in the diaspora and their homeland. In Cleveland’s Hungarian Catholic community, he not only served at St. Imre Parish but also took on a role as administrator in the St. Elizabeth Parish—which has Hungarian roots—following the retirement of András Antal. After five years of service in the United States, the Archdiocese of Veszprém recalled him to Hungary in 2020. At that time, he was appointed pastor of the St. Thérèse of Lisieux II Parish in Keszthely, assistant pastor of the Várvölgy Parish, and chaplain at the Keszthely Hospital.
