Biographical data
Father József Marczinkó was born in Sátoraljaújhely on December 24, 1878. His father was József Marczinkó, and his mother was Júlia Nagy. He was ordained a priest in Košice on February 5, 1903. He arrived in the United States in 1910 aboard the steamship Carpathia. From 1913 to 1915, he served as pastor of St. Stephen’s Parish in Youngstown, OH (Youngstown, Ohio), In 1915, he took over the leadership of the parish, and it was during his tenure that the Hungarian community weathered World War I; at the end of the war, some members returned to Hungary, reducing the number of parishioners. In 1921, under his organization, 23 carloads of gift packages were sent to the homeland, for which he received the Red Cross Cross of Merit. Between 1925 and 1927, he published a weekly newspaper titled *Magyar Szív* (Hungarian Heart). The economic crisis and other circumstances left the parish in financial ruin, but religious life flourished—perhaps precisely because of this. Father Marczinkó was considered the finest parish priest and preacher at St. Stephen’s Church. In 1928, he filed his own patent under United States Patent No. 1681590 for a “Bowling Game Board,” a patent that remains in force to this day. His whereabouts between 1932 and 1935 are unknown; some sources mention Toledo, OH. He died on July 28, 1935, in Toledo, Ohio, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, as a result of a cerebral embolism, at 5:55 a.m. He was buried on July 31. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, where his predecessor, Rev. Géza Messerschmiedt, is also buried.
