Biographical data
He pursued his theological studies in Uzhhorod and Rome. He was ordained a priest—while still unmarried—on December 19, 1926, by Péter Gebé, Bishop of Munkács. He earned his doctorate in Rome. In 1938, following the Vienna Award, Transcarpathia was returned to Hungary; at that time, he was granted the title of canon, which, although attempts were later made to strip him of it, could not be done without Rome’s permission. From 1941, he was the recipient of the Middle Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit, and from 1942, of the Cross of National Defense. Canon of Munkács (1941–1944). From 1934, he served as a councilor to the Holy See. From 1939, he was a ministerial councilor, and later head of the Department of Religion and Public Education in the Carpathian Ruthenia Governorate. After 1944, he relocated to the Diocese of Veszprém, where he was incardinated—having obtained permission to change rites. He left the country in 1948.
