He was born in the United States. His parents were János Lengyel and Vilma Auguszta Gojdics; he had five siblings. They returned to Hungary at an early age. He completed his theological studies in Eperjes. In 1914, he married Márta Korotnoky; they had two daughters. On November 4, 1917, he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Eperjes by Bishop István Novák. In 1924, he was transferred to the Apostolic Exarchate of Miskolc. In 1935, he was appointed papal chaplain.
