He was a second-generation Hungarian. His parents were Mihály Kovách and Mária Zahransky; he was the brother of Balázs Pál Kovách, a Greek Catholic priest. He was baptized at St. John’s Church in Cleveland, OH. He completed his high school studies at the Benedictine school in Cleveland. He graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1961, and from St. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh in 1965. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Nicholas T. Elko on March 25, 1965, at St. Nicholas Church in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.
