He is a second-generation Hungarian. His parents were András Pál Kopcsa and Helén Mária Török; he has five siblings.
He graduated from high school in 1949 and then served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955. He studied at Loyola University in Chicago, IL. He was ordained a priest on May 28, 1966, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne. He celebrated his first Mass at the Hungarian church in South Bend, IL. Due to serious illness, he retired from active pastoral work in 1987.
His grave is located at the Hungarian Sacred Heart Cemetery in South Bend, IL.
