Biographical data
János Hlebik, known in American sources as Rev. John A. Hlebik, was born on March 7, 1861, in Szepesolaszi, within the Diocese of Szepes. He was ordained a priest on September 1, 1883. After serving in Hungary, he moved to the United States, where he provided pastoral care to Catholic immigrants of Hungarian origin, some of whom were Slovak and others Hungarian. His ministry in the United States can be definitively traced to St. Joseph’s Slovak Catholic Church in Bayonne, New Jersey, where he is listed as the successor to Rev. Samuel Bela after 1895. Later, his name is also associated with the history of the Hungarian Catholic community in Alpha, New Jersey, which later became St. Mary Parish / Our Lady of Hungary Church. Additional records suggest that Throop and Ashley, Pennsylvania, as well as Alpha, New Jersey, may also have been among his places of service. He passed away on May 14, 1938, in the United States; his grave is located at the Holy Name Cemetery and Mausoleum in Jersey City.
