Biographical data
His original name was Hirsh, which he changed to Hetényi at an unknown date. Based on the order’s directories, it can be established that he took his vows on September 9, 1933; in the 1935 directory, he is listed as a fifth-year theology student. Presumably, he had completed theological studies elsewhere before entering the order and joined as a third-year theology student. He does not appear in the order’s seminary directories from 1940 onward. According to sources, he left the priesthood after 1940, married Jean Gertrude Rose Gareis in 1945, and Maria Hendrika Stolle in 1969. He received U.S. citizenship in 1947. In 1949, he served as an Episcopal minister. His first wife was murdered, and he was charged with the crime; he was initially sentenced to death, but the sentence was overturned several times. Finally, after four trials, he was found guilty and sentenced to a prison term ranging from forty years to life. Eventually, following a complex legal process, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and was released on June 6, 1966. He is buried at Saint Francis Cemetery in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
