Biographical data
He graduated from the Pelbárt Ferences High School in Esztergom in 1963, then pursued his theological studies in Győr from 1963 to 1967, during which time he served in the military from 1967 to 1969 in Nagyatád. He completed his studies in Szeged from 1969 to 1971. He was ordained a priest on June 15, 1971.
On September 8, 1972, with the archbishop’s permission, he left the country for Brazil at the invitation of the Benedictines of São Paulo, where, with the permission of Bishop László Lékai, he was to provide pastoral care for the Hungarian emigrant community there. Upon arrival, however, he did not receive this assignment; instead, the Brazilian parish of Nova Santa Rosa in the state of Paraná, led by Szeverin Kögl, OSB, the Brazilian parish of Nova Santa Rosa in the state of Paraná, as a Benedictine novitiate opportunity, which he did not accept; consequently, he had to leave the monastery and requested his laicization, which he later withdrew.
He worked as a factory worker for a year, and then, beginning in 1973, Paulo Evaristo Arns, Archbishop of São Paulo, welcomed him into his diocese, first as a coadjutor and then, beginning in 1974, as a parish priest. In recognition of his pastoral achievements, the archbishop sent him to Rome in 1976, where he studied Church History at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He earned his doctorate in Church History in 1987. He has been a Brazilian citizen since 1978. He completed his postgraduate studies in Rome in 1980, then returned to São Paulo, where he served as deputy director of the historical section of the Archdiocesan Archives until 1981, as well as an assistant pastor on weekends in the slums on the city’s outskirts.
Due to the unexpected death of his father, he returned to Rome in 1981, where he served as a research fellow and then archivist for the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith until 1994, when he returned home permanently.
From 1994, he taught modern church history as an associate professor in the Department of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Szeged (JATE).
In 1996, he left the priesthood and entered into a civil marriage.
He retired in 2005, and his marriage ended in divorce in 2018.
Since 2022, he has been a resident of the Franciscan Social Home in Esztergom.
His request for re-incardination was approved by the Holy See, but Archbishop György Udvardy of Veszprém did not grant permission, citing his age.
