Biographical data
Szülei Fáy Gábor alispán, királyi tanácsos és Diószeghy Zsuzsa. Reformátusnak keresztelték, 1736-ban tért át a katolikus vallásra. Nagyszombatban bölcseletet hallgatott, majd Bécsben 1736. november 8-án lépett be a jezsuita rendbe. Próbaideje után Szakolcán elvégezte a tanárképzőt. Onnan 1740-ben Nagyszombatba került a bölcseleti tanulmányok befejezésére. 1743–4-ben Sopronban, majd egy-egy évig Nagyszombatban és Győrben tanított. A teológiát Bécsben kezdte el 1747-ben, és Kassán folytatta. 1748-ban szentelték pappá. 1753-ban ment misszióba, ahol sikerült elérnie a békét a guanajara indiánokkal a Marañonban és Gran Parában érvényben lévő „missziós kormányzat” értelmében. A portugál kormányzó, Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado, Pombal miniszter testvére, ezt a megegyezést „lázadó politikai békekötés”-nek minősítette, és megtámadta a missziót. Levelet írt a portugál királynőnek, Ausztriai Mária Annának. Levelét azonban a portugálok elfogták és meghamisítva továbbították. Ennek alapján Fáyt lázadással és felségsértéssel vádolták. 1757-ben elfogták és Portugáliába vitték. Ott először Rorizba száműzték. 1759-ben az almeidai börtönbe, onnan 1762-ben a lisszaboni São Julião da Barra erődbe került, és ott halt meg. Életéről bőven ír Bangha Béla SJ.
